Last Friday we had a small Full Moon party for Fighter. Fighter is like 4 and half months old now which is way older than any Full Moon baby should be but we never organized a Full Moon earlier on because he was premature and we were worried about exposing him to lots of people before his immune system had a chance to build up. Besides in his actual first month, he was still in intensive care in the hospital. This December though we decided it was time to have a little party for Fighter. So we did one in Penang, mostly for my parents’ friends and relatives. The fun part was that we got lots of presents at the end of it.
If you follow Fighter’s Dayre, you’d know that one of the presents that he got was this.
Something that totally looked like it was for a female baby.
I remember very well the uncle who bought it for Fighter. When he arrived at the party I said hi to him and he congratulated me and passed me this present. I looked at the wrapper and notice it was a pink Dora the Explorer wrapper so I was kinda thinking that maybe he didn’t get the memo that Fighter was a boy… not a girl. Then again I gave it the benefit of the doubt and thought that maybe it was just the wrapper. And inside was a present for a baby boy.
Then he asked me “How’s your baby girl?”.
And I said “Ohh… it’s a boy”. My suspicions were confirmed. He thought it was a baby girl.
He just said “Oh really… ohh… ok”.
And that point I could tell from his facial expression he had an awkward conflict going on in his mind. He was probably like “OH SHIT… it’s a boy? I bought girls’ clothing….what do I do now? Do I take it back? Do I?”…. but I think he opted for the option of just leaving it and hoping that we would have so many presents I won’t know which present came from which uncle anyway hehehe.
When I told Shorty about it later she laughed and she double-laughed when she opened the present and saw its contents. The truth is we thought it was a funny moment and in no way blame anything on this poor uncle. In fact he’s always been an awesome uncle to me…
This incident though brought back a memory I had as a kid. I think I was around 5 years old when I was invited to a friend’s birthday party. That friend was a boy but somehow I thought it would be funny if I bought him a girl’s present. So when my mom brought me to buy him a present I kept saying it was a girl and wanted to buy him a Barbie doll. My mom was like ‘Are you sure’? and I was like “Yes yes yes”. So we bought him a Barbie doll and witnessed the moment he opened his present to see a Barbie doll. I think my mom was there too and she was greatly embarrassed. Imagine how she had to explain to people who may not have believed her, that her 5 year old son told her it was for a girl.
I realized at that moment that … what I thought would be funny wasn’t funny at all (and I later learned from other incidents that many other things I thought would be funny didn’t appear funny when they happened… silly boy I was). So I never did that again and it was an incident I always remembered till today. Heck I don’t remember much of what I did when I was 5 years old… but this one I did. Still I think he had great presents. One of the presents this boy had was a full blown Optimus Prime toy… something I always wished I had but never did. I was such a naughty boy growing up. I hope Fighter doesn’t follow after his father in that respect. Heh.
I shall end this post with a picture of Shorty wearing the pink hat the uncle had bought Fighter.
Oh…this is my last blog post for the year which is why I think this is an apt last picture of the year for me. It’s of my beautiful and loving wife who fought hard this year to bring us both a healthy boy named Jude (Fighter). So Happy New Year guys!
Hope 2013 was a good one for you guys. It was a challenging year for me but it was the year that I got Fighter after all… so that more than makes it the year for me. I’m optimistic that 2014 will be an awesome one!
